Dr. Paul Velting

Optometrist

Dr. Velting and his wife Katie are thrilled to be part of the Morton community! While Katie was born and raised in Morton, Dr. Velting is originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan. He completed his bachelor's degree at Taylor University, and graduated with honors from the Indiana University School of Optometry.

​​​​​​​Before moving to Morton and joining our practice in 2016, Dr. Velting practiced in Deerfield, Illinois, specializing in the treatment of anterior segment eye diseases, specialty contact lenses, glaucoma management, and primary eye care.

Dr. Velting is currently chair of the Contact Lens and Cornea Section of the American Optometric Association, and past chair of the Public Health Committee of the Illinois Optometric Association. Additionally, he has held adjunct faculty positions at the Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, and Pennsylvania Schools of Optometry, and is board certified in the treatment and management of ocular disease. 

Outside of optometry, Dr. Velting enjoys playing sports, mountain biking, traveling, and spending time with his wife Katie, and two children Henry and Adeline.

Dr. Brian Sommer

Optometrist

Dr. Brian C. Sommer was born and raised in Hopedale, IL and did his undergraduate work at Eastern Illinois University. After serving two years with the Mennonite Central Committee in Southern Germany building a church and conference center, he graduated from the Southern School of Optometry in 1980.

​​​​​​​He interned with the Naval Academy in Corpus Christie, Texas, and began his optometric career with Dr. Richard Voller in Pekin, IL. He later moved to Woodstock, IL where he practiced for seven years.

Dr. Sommer returned to Central Illinois and opened Vintage Optical with Susan Colby in 1995. In addition to Vintage Optical, Dr. Sommer has provided clinical assistance to the TCRC Sight Center, is a member of the Illinois Optometry Society and the American Optometric Society, and serves on the board of the Mennonite Relief Sale. In his free time, Dr. Sommer enjoys golf, hiking and cycling, spending time with his wife, Karen, and two children, Luke and Angela.

Susan Colby

Office Manager / Head Optician

Susan came to central Illinois over 35 years ago from the Chicago suburb of Elmhurst. After an extensive and very successful career as a sales consultant and educator for a leading eyewear manufacturer, she joined forces with Dr. Sommer in 1995 to open Vintage Optical. After working side by side with Dr. Sommer for 20 years, she has become one of the area’s best opticians and eyewear consultants.
Sue is a member of Morton Rotary, where she has served as the club’s Youth Exchange Officer since 2010. Outside of the office, Susan enjoys gardening, working on home renovation projects, advocating for disabled adults in Heart of Morton, and actively participating in a local book club. She and her husband Dale, of Colby Natural Health, have enjoyed being small business owners. They have three grown children, any of which you may see employed from time to time at either of their small businesses.

Lynne Martin

Lead Ophthalmic Technician / Certified Paraoptometric

Lynne was born in Portland Oregan, and moved to Roanoke , IL in the first grade. She was a licensed insurance agent for 15 years. She then began working as an opthalmic technician in 2000 and became a certified paraoptometric in 2010. She joined Vintage Optical in February 2019.
As a cancer survivor, she has enjoyed volunteering on the Susan G. Komen committee. In her spare time, she sings in her church choir, loves travelling to the ocean and the mountains. Shopping and reading also rates high on her list!

Lori Crumrine

Receptionist / Accountant

Lori joined the Vintage Optical team in 2010 after raising and homeschooling her three children into super-successful adults. Since then, she has streamlined our accounting, scheduling, and filing procedures. When Lori is not manning the front desk, she enjoys hiking, riding bikes, walking with her husband, and being active in her church. She especially enjoys spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Dr. Terry Goodale

Dr. Terry Goodale was born and raised in Morton, Illinois, where he attended local schools before earning his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Iowa and his Doctorate of Optometry from the Southern California College of Optometry. He completed clinical rotations at several renowned facilities, including the David Grant Medical Center in California and New Eyes in Las Vegas.
